We give a complete characterization of the parity of $b_8(n)$, the number of $8$-regular partitions of $n$. Namely, we prove that $b_8(n)$ is odd or even depending on whether or not we have the factorisation $24n+7=p^{4a+1}m^2$, for some prime $p\nmid m$ and $a\ge 0$.

We provide new examples of 3-manifolds with weight one fundamental group and the same integral homology as the lens space $L(2k,1)$ which are not surgery on any knot in the three-sphere. Our argument uses Furuta's 10/8-theorem, and is simple and combinatorial to apply.

We show that three-dimensional N=8 $Sp(N)$ and $SO(2N+1)$ gauge theories flow to the same strong coupling fixed point. As a consequence, the corresponding orientifold two-planes in type IIA string theory are described at strong coupling and low-energies by the same M theory background. In the large $N$ limit, these assertions are confirmed by studying discrete torsion in the supergravity theory corresponding to membranes on $R^8/Z_2$.

Using simplifying assumptions that are related to the time reversal symmetry, a 1-dimensional family of 8-stage pseudo-symplectic Runge-Kutta methods of order (4, 8), i.e., methods of order 4 that preserve symplectic structure up to order 8, is derived. An example of 7-stage method of order (4, 9) is given.
