国库研究院（KRI）发布《理解马来西亚的学校供餐》研究报告指出，如果政府学校 实施免费供餐期间，没有排除富人子弟的措施，将会导致开销升高，但却有许多优点，比如，可以促进不同家庭背景的学生相互理解与交流。如果只限贫困家庭的学生享用免费餐点，就会造成反效果，这些获得政府援助 的贫困学生会蒙受羞辱。学生可能为了避免蒙羞而拒绝接受援助，导致无法达致政策目标。报告援引2003年美国纽约市的研究，证明若实施普遍的供餐计划，就可以避免上述问题。这将有助于不同家庭背景的学生相互理解。
